The chair in the bay looks likely to be claimed first. It has the street view, a little table and its own lamp, with bare timber separating it from the rug. Across the room, the brown sofa faces the fireplace, and the oak coffee table sits between them. Both spots have something going for them, which is a useful starting point for a shared sitting room. Give the bay a job

Carry blue around the room

Blue appears at different scales: long curtains, sections of the geometric rug and passages of abstract paint. The repetition connects opposite walls while leaving plenty of pale plaster between the darker pieces.

What to borrow

Try placing one chair outside the main sofa arrangement, with its own light and a surface for a cup. Check the walk to the window before adding a second piece; a bay can work beautifully with very little furniture.
