Lunch among the pelargoniums

Published

A country cottage, conceived for East Sussex.

The pelargoniums nearly steal lunch. Pink and red flowers crowd the low bench beyond the table, with a watering can left among the pots. Painting the conservatory frame a warm tomato red makes that abundance feel at home, while a weathered table and tan leather chairs keep the room firmly useful.

THE DESIGN

The plant collection has its own surface. That leaves the dining table free for plates and glasses, and gives the room a pleasingly uneven background of terracotta, leaves and flowers.

The table sits to one side of the garden door, with room to pass alongside it. Canvas blinds soften the roof light. On the stone floor, the narrow black chair frames draw very little attention away from the timber and planting.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Red-painted framing and a working plant bench give the dining room a generous dose of garden character.

Colour palette

01

Red on the structure

A single strong paint colour gives the conservatory frame presence.

02

A bench for the pots

Gathering the plants on one surface keeps the dining table usable.

03

Light chair frames

Cane backs and slender legs let the garden remain visible through the group.

04

Space beside the table

The door has its own approach, separate from the dining chairs.

WHAT TO BORROW

Give a favourite plant collection a proper bench, then keep the table for eating.
