Past the French doors

Published

A traditional southern house, conceived for Athens, GA.

Peach walls look particularly good beside a garden. Here the green window frames sharpen their warmth, while a long weathered-timber sofa keeps the room relaxed. The chairs turn toward an irregular wooden table, close enough for a jug of iced tea to be passed around without anyone getting up.

THE DESIGN

A large still life gives the solid wall the same confidence as the glazing. Its ochre tones sit easily with the rug and sofa cushions, so the color continues across the room without becoming a matching set.

The high ceiling and fan suit the porch-like proportions. Woven chair backs admit glimpses of the planting, and the glazed door remains at the side of the sitting group. A shaded lamp makes a useful smaller pool of light beside the sofa.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Tall green-framed windows give peach plaster and weathered timber a crisp outline.

  • Peach
  • Bottle green
  • Weathered teak

01

A strong window colour

Bottle green holds the tall glazing together against the pale plaster.

02

One substantial painting

The still life gives the solid wall a focal point of its own.

03

Weathered and woven

Timber grain and rope soften the formal height of the room.

04

A useful central surface

The irregular table is large enough for a tray without filling the rug.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose a substantial painting for the solid wall of a room with equally substantial windows.
