The window seat runs on

Published

A shingle-style family house, conceived for Freeport, ME.

The window seat is long enough for reading at one end and conversation at the other. Red checks give it a cheerful presence beneath the white-painted windows, with books nearby and the garden almost at shoulder height. Two timber chairs draw up to a low table; a jigsaw has its own place in the corner.

THE DESIGN

The bench makes good use of the long window wall while keeping the center available for movable furniture. Its fitted base sits neatly beneath the casings, stopping before the garden door.

Open timber chair backs carry some of that rhythm into the room. A small square puzzle table can stay occupied without taking over the coffee table, which is a modest convenience with a considerable effect on how often a room gets used.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A long cushioned bench gives the garden view to more than one person at a time.

Colour palette

  • Warm white
  • Vermilion check
  • Teak
  • Chalk blue
01

A generous window seat

The long bench offers several places to settle along the same view.

02

A table that can stay busy

The jigsaw has a separate surface, leaving room for drinks elsewhere.

03

Books on the solid wall

Shelves make the window seat a convenient reading place.

04

An open edge

The seating stops short of the garden door, preserving a clear approach.

WHAT TO BORROW

Give an activity that takes time, such as a puzzle, a surface it can keep.
