Furniture below the view

ROOM 175 · Other
A timber mountain house, conceived for Crested Butte, CO.
The pines are close enough to set the mood. Inside, a white-cushioned sofa sits beneath the windows, with grey chairs pulled around a low timber table. Rust-coloured plaster and a patterned wool rug keep the room warm in tone, while the roof beams give the mountain setting a convincing structure.

The furniture stays low under the vault. That difference in height allows the roof to feel generous without requiring oversized seating or an imposing fireplace.
A simple contour drawing picks up the lines of the view on the solid wall. Below it, timber, wool and the stone skirting offer enough variation to keep the palette interesting. The open strip beside the chairs leads directly to the garden door.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
Low sofa backs leave more of the glazing visible.
Rust plaster balances the cooler greens and greys beyond the windows.
Exposed timber gives the vault a clear rhythm.
A large patterned rug brings colour into the centre of the seating group.
WHAT TO BORROW
In a tall room, let the roof provide the drama and keep the furniture at a comfortable scale.
