Three usable places
The island, dining table and chairs support different parts of an evening.

ROOM 181 · Kitchen
A suburban family house, conceived for Mebane, NC.
Two reading chairs make the difference here. They sit at the garden end of a kitchen with a round dining table beyond, giving someone a comfortable place to spend the evening without occupying the cook's working space. Dusty blue cupboards and oak keep the broad room calm; woven seats give it some texture.

The kitchen and island run along one side. That arrangement leaves a distinct area for the table, beneath a rooflight and a loose group of landscape drawings.
The chairs face one another over a small side table. An olive rug marks their patch of floor, and a shaded lamp lowers the scale at night. The glazing connects all three parts of the room to the same garden.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
The island, dining table and chairs support different parts of an evening.
Its circular top distinguishes dining from the long kitchen run.
Woven backs soften the larger expanses of cabinetry and glass.
A smaller light makes the sitting area comfortable after cooking is finished.
WHAT TO BORROW
Give the sitting area in a kitchen extension its own rug, light and reachable table.
