Keep the route legible
The sideboard and sofa follow the two long walls. A visible band of bare floor runs beside the storage, separating the route through the room from the table and rug.

An illustrated concept for Antwerp townhouse living room.
A long cream sofa and an oak sideboard occupy opposite walls of this Antwerp sitting room. Between them, a small patterned rug and a round grooved table leave the floor beside the storage visible.
See the product sourcesThe useful space in this room is the strip of floor beside the sideboard. Keeping the sofa along the opposite wall gives that route a clear direction towards the two tall front windows. This Antwerp townhouse concept could have become very solemn in cream and oak, but the charcoal spots on the rug interrupt the good behaviour. A grooved round table adds another tactile surface, and the woven artwork above the sofa has enough scale to hold the wall. The cupboards provide somewhere for less decorative belongings, which every pale room eventually acquires.

Give a small rug a clear job
The patterned rug sits beneath the coffee table, rather than stretching under the entire sofa. Its dark spots make that central patch distinct, with the round table interrupting the rectangular floor plan.
What to borrow
Choose the walking route before positioning a coffee table or rug. In a narrow room, keeping one side visibly clear can make the arrangement easier to understand. Check cabinet doors with the furniture in place, especially when storage faces seating.
The architecture is an imagined European setting; linked product references are sourced for UK readers. Delivery to this setting has not been verified.
