Supper at the bottom of the garden

Published

A glazed garden pavilion, conceived for Hampshire.

There is something appealing about carrying supper a little way into the garden. This pavilion makes the destination worthwhile: a substantial table, upholstered cane chairs and a serving cupboard beneath a lamp. Aubergine frames hold the green view together, while the pale roof keeps the room light above.

THE DESIGN

The solid roof gives the pavilion a more sheltered character than an all-glass enclosure. A small central lantern brings daylight to the table, and glazing on three sides keeps the borders close.

The sideboard is useful before anyone sits down, with space for dishes, water and the things brought from the house. A woven rug softens the stone floor beneath the chairs. The garden door remains easy to reach at the side.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Dark-painted glazing turns the planting into the backdrop for a proper dining room.

Colour palette

  • Aubergine
  • Ivory
  • Dark timber
  • Faded green
01

A sheltered roof

The pale ceiling gives the dining room a comfortable sense of enclosure.

02

Dark frames around green

Aubergine outlines the view without another strong colour inside.

03

Somewhere to serve

The sideboard supports the table with space for dishes and drinks.

04

Softness beneath the chairs

A rug takes the harder edge off the stone-floored pavilion.

WHAT TO BORROW

Give a garden dining room a serving surface, so every meal needs fewer trips back to the house.
