The carriage house has company

Published

A detached carriage-house retreat, conceived for Portland, OR.

The windows look into the trees, with neighbouring roofs just below. That raised view gives this carriage-house room a little privacy, while fir-green walls make the timber casings feel particularly warm. A full sofa takes the best position; a folding desk fits into the quieter wall beside it.

THE DESIGN

The pale cushions keep the green room from becoming heavy. A woven lounge chair has enough presence to join the sofa, but its open frame leaves the patterned rug and wooden floor visible.

The desk is modest, with a lamp, a chair and room for a notebook. Small linocuts hang above it, and books occupy the nearby shelves. There is enough here for an evening's reading or a morning's work without turning the sitting room into an office.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A full sofa and a folding desk give a compact upper-floor room two useful roles.

Colour palette

  • Fir green
  • Cinnamon
  • Canvas
  • Douglas fir
01

A view above the garden

Raised windows bring tree canopies into the room and establish its upper-floor setting.

02

A full-size sofa

One comfortable main piece avoids a collection of undersized substitutes.

03

A folding work surface

The wall desk adds a useful task without another large freestanding piece.

04

Green around warm timber

Paint gives the window casings and floor a richer contrast.

WHAT TO BORROW

In a small living room, choose one full-size seat before fitting in the secondary tasks.
