Blue shutters, terracotta walls

Published

Older European family home · A sociable table for four

The flowers are low enough to see the person opposite. That modest decision matters in a dining room with so much else going on: terracotta walls, blue shutters and patterned plates. A round table keeps the four seats in one conversation.

THE DESIGN

The deep window reveal gives the blue shutters a substantial frame against the terracotta. Cream chairs leave a pale area at table height. The 120cm table has a wood-effect top and crossed base; the selected chair set supplies all four seats shown.

Dark shapes in the textile artwork repeat blue above the slim console. Smaller birds and branches stay on the plates. The woven pendant follows the table's rounded outline, and the low vase leaves faces visible. Allow room beyond the rug for chairs pulled away from the table.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Let the colour be bold and the table easy to share.

Colour palette

  • Terracotta
  • Coral
  • Shutter blue
  • Warm cream
  • Dark timber
01

Wall colour establishes personality

Terracotta is the main decision, covering enough wall to feel settled. The blue window provides a smaller, cooler counterpoint, while cream seats keep the middle of the room light.

02

Give four seats one centre

The round tabletop gives each chair access to the middle. Its crossed base stays beneath the group instead of adding four legs at the seating edge.

03

Pattern adds rhythm

The artwork has large dark shapes; the plates carry much smaller details. Separating their scales keeps the two patterns readable.

04

Keep the flowers below eye level

The small vase holds a few airy stems. It gives the table detail without requiring people to peer around a large centrepiece.

05

Use one light for the table

The wicker globe sits above the shared surface. Its open weave remains visible against the plaster, while daylight reaches the table through the deep window.

WHAT TO BORROW

Pick the dominant wall colour and judge the shutters beside it. Keep the seats, lighting and centrepiece comfortable to use; colour cannot compensate for a difficult table.

Tribesigns Brown 120cm Round Dining Table

A generous round table with a sculptural crossed base

The round top keeps the dining area sociable, while the broad crossed base gives this table a stronger presence than a simple four-legged design. The selected Brown version measures 120cm across and 75cm high, with an engineered-wood construction and a rustic wood-effect finish. Pair it with uncomplicated upholstered chairs and a deeper wall colour to bring out the pattern in the top. Designed for four people; leave room around it for chairs to pull out comfortably. The table is sold without chairs, and the accessories shown are styling props.

Goeurvant Beige Upholstered Dining Chairs, Set of 4

Textured beige upholstery with light wooden legs

Narrow stitched channels bring detail to the curved backs, while the beige fabric and light wooden legs keep these dining armchairs easy to pair with oak and terracotta. The upholstered sides wrap gently around the seat, giving the chairs a more relaxed feel at the table. This link selects the beige set of four; the styling image shows two chairs from the set. Check the full dimensions and arm height against your table before ordering. The table and accessories are styling props.

Felisteya Handmade Colourful Ceramic Vase, 16 cm

Decorative vase

This colourful ceramic vase caught our eye for its vibrant palette and rounded silhouette. At 16 cm tall, it offers a concentrated accent for a shelf or console; we’d give it space beside quieter ceramics, either on its own or with a few stems that leave its shape in view.

Sara Miller London Chelsea 12-Piece Porcelain Dinner Set

Birds, rich colour and gold detail for the table

Turquoise, deep navy and delicate gold branches turn the tableware into part of the decoration. The Chelsea collection pairs colourful birds with fine porcelain and gold detailing, which works beautifully against dark timber and plum linen. This 12-piece set contains four 28cm dinner plates, four 20cm salad plates and four 15cm cereal bowls. We have shown a selection of the designs; check the retailer for the full colour assortment and care instructions. Cutlery, glassware and flowers are styling props.
