Six places, most evenings

Published

British period townhouse · Dining for six

A table for six needn't wait for a dinner party. Striped seats and familiar timber shapes make this period dining room comfortable with an ordinary meal, while the chandelier gives the table enough light to stay at afterwards.

THE DESIGN

The sash windows and mouldings give the room its tall proportions. A rectangular table puts the gathering at a lower level, with open chair backs leaving the window visible. The 180cm table holds six places; allow extra floor around the rug when chairs are pulled out.

A narrow cabinet keeps serving pieces nearby without taking over the wall. The chandelier's six glass shades distribute light along the tabletop. Plain porcelain, two candlesticks and small vases leave the food room to arrive.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Make the dining room easy to use on an ordinary evening.

Colour palette

  • Warm ivory
  • Mushroom
  • Walnut
  • Deep olive
  • Aged brass
01

Centre the things people share

Table and chandelier sit together, so the light reaches the gathering. The narrow cabinet can stand to one side without needing a matching piece opposite.

02

Mix the timber at different scales

The darker table gives the lighter chairs a clear edge to sit against. Visible floorboards connect the group without requiring every wood finish to match.

03

Let the table carry the smaller colours

Ivory and mushroom stay on the larger surfaces. Foliage and brass add smaller changes at the table and cabinet, leaving room for different flowers or crockery.

04

Keep the useful outlines simple

Open chair backs let you see across the room. Striped linen and fluted glass supply detail close up, without a heavier furniture outline.

05

Soft light creates intimacy

The chandelier lights the length of the table. Candles bring a smaller light down towards the place settings when the meal runs later.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose chairs for the length of time you want to sit in them. Check their pull-back space around the rug before treating the chandelier as the main decision.

Amazon Basics White 18-Piece Porcelain Dinner Set

Simple white pieces that work with almost any table

Plain white porcelain leaves room for the rest of the setting: striped napkins, coloured glass or a favourite bunch of flowers. This 18-piece set includes six 26.5cm dinner plates, six 19cm dessert plates and six bowls measuring 14cm across and 7cm high. The smooth shapes make an easy starting point for everyday dining. Our image shows selected pieces from the set; cutlery, glasses, linen and flowers are styling props.
