Room to move on the deck

Published

A large contemporary detached house, conceived for Hudson Valley, NY.

A big deck can still leave everyone sitting in a row along the wall. Here the sofa turns away from the house, and two low chairs face it across a rough-edged table. The meadow remains visible beyond their backs. There is room to arrive with a tray, pull another chair over or step out of the conversation. The size matters because it makes those small changes easy.

THE DESIGN

The broad floor is used for one generous gathering rather than divided into several underfurnished corners. The sofa and chairs face one another, leaving the meadow to be seen between and above their backs. Nobody has to choose between a conversation and the view.

The Granada frames have a firm, repeated outline. Against them, the River table introduces an irregular edge and a different kind of timber surface. That contrast is enough; a patterned rug or another row of pots would make the deck work harder than it needs to.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

One generous sitting group makes a broad deck useful without filling every edge.

Colour palette

  • Silver cedar
  • Ink
  • Persimmon
  • Warm white
01

One complete group

The wide deck supports a useful conversation area rather than scattered seats.

02

Low outlines

Seating leaves the meadow visible from inside the group.

03

An irregular edge

The root table interrupts the straight deck boards without disturbing the plan.

04

Room to arrive

Open floor around the seats accommodates a tray or another person.

WHAT TO BORROW

Use a large deck to improve the space around one good group.
