Carry lunch straight outside

Published

A modern farmhouse, conceived for Des Moines edge, IA.

An outdoor table should be easy to reach with a dish in both hands. This one sits just beyond the kitchen, beneath shade that covers the people as well as the tabletop. Eight slender chairs have room to pull out. Once everyone has arrived, the serving stand takes the spare jug and the center of the table can stay open.

THE DESIGN

Eight places need more than a long tabletop. Chairs must pull out, someone must pass behind them, and a dish needs to arrive without being handed over several shoulders. The table sits close to the kitchen while the surrounding paving stays useful.

The Wave chairs have slender outlines against the heavier Bradford table. A separate tray stand takes the extra jug or serving dish, so the center can remain available. Overhead shade makes the setting a destination without enclosing the garden.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A single long table earns its size through generous pull-out space and a short route to the house.

01

Eight proper places

Three chairs on each long side and one at each end give a balanced arrangement.

02

Space behind the seats

Pulling out a chair is part of the plan.

03

Serving nearby

The tray stand takes things that would crowd the table.

04

Shade defines the room

The pergola marks the dining area without walls.

WHAT TO BORROW

Plan the chairs in use, not only tucked neatly beneath the table.
