Dinner beside the courtyard

Published

A timber-lined dining room with high daylight and a small courtyard view.

A small table can still be a substantial piece of furniture. Here its shaped walnut supports are the main event, with open-backed chairs leaving space around the meal.

THE DESIGN

High glazing brings daylight above the furniture, and the courtyard gives the table a view. The Japanese influence is expressed through the space left around those elements. The passage beside the chairs must still work once people sit down.

The Toru table has a solid-looking top and shaped panel supports. Woven cane chair backs keep that weight from repeating at every seat; the paler oak sideboard takes spare tableware to the wall. Above it, Dancing makes a broad black line across a pale field. It is enough of a gesture for the room.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A substantial table needs space for its chairs as much as for its shape.

01

Let the table establish the weight

The shaped Toru pedestals make the table a strong object. Cane chair backs keep the surrounding seats more open.

02

Allow two timber tones

Darker walnut at the meal and paler oak at the wall create depth. They share warmth without pretending to be the same finish.

03

Keep the wall composition open

Dancing contains plenty of pale space around its black line. The picture adds movement without another dense pattern.

04

Protect the occupied route

The passage beside the table belongs to people moving through the house. Test it with a chair pulled out, not only with everything pushed in.

WHAT TO BORROW

Choose one substantial table, then give the chairs and circulation equal attention. A restrained palette cannot compensate for a cramped meal.
