The garden beyond the sink

Published

A interwar detached, conceived for Bristol.

The blue island is the boldest thing in the room, but the terracotta floor does much of the warming. Pale birch cupboards keep the working wall light, with a high strip of glass bringing daylight over their tops. At the table, grey upholstered chairs make a comfortable place for more than a quick meal.

THE DESIGN

The sink gets a garden view of its own, with a pink blind softening the window. That little patch of colour sits easily beside the blue island because the surrounding timber is so consistent.

A striped bench occupies a spare length of glazing, and a green cupboard gives the room a less fitted character. Pictures, a child's drawing and a shaded lamp make the dining end feel settled within the household.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

Pale timber, blue paint and terracotta give a practical family kitchen a lively balance.

Colour palette

  • Cobalt
  • Birch
  • Terracotta
  • Rose
01

A warm floor

Terracotta supplies colour across the room without another painted wall.

02

Light above the cupboards

The high glazing brightens the working end of the extension.

03

A blue focal point

The island has a clear presence among pale timber fronts.

04

A softer dining end

Upholstered chairs and a table lamp encourage a longer stay.

WHAT TO BORROW

Test a strong island colour against the floor material, not only the cupboard fronts.
