A long weekend on the porch

Published

A coastal shingle house, conceived for Duxbury, MA.

On a weekend with no fixed plans, the porch is where people keep finding one another. A sofa and two open-backed chairs make a complete sitting room within the broad screened shell. The path to the garden runs along one side, so someone can leave for a walk without asking everyone else to move. Above it all, a blue ceiling gives the room a little more conviction than the usual white-painted enclosure.

THE DESIGN

The roof and screens establish the room before the furniture does. White framing gives the garden a measured rhythm, while the blue boards draw attention upward without asking for a matching collection of blue objects.

The Naples sofa supplies the long seat; the Ravoli chairs answer it with open backs. A substantial square table gives all three seats a shared center, with the garden door free at the side. The arrangement can hold a conversation without holding everyone captive.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A proper sitting group and a separate garden route let a broad porch hold an entire afternoon.

Colour palette

  • Cerulean
  • Weathered gray
  • Cream
  • Teak
01

A route of its own

The garden door sits beside the group, keeping departures out of the conversation.

02

Color overhead

Blue gives the ceiling presence while the upholstery stays pale.

03

Open backs

Rope chairs admit the view through the mesh instead of building another barrier.

04

A common center

The square table gives the sofa and both chairs somewhere useful to turn.

WHAT TO BORROW

Draw the path to the garden before deciding where the sofa goes.
