Before coffee, on the porch

Published

A southern porch house, conceived for Athens, GA.

The porch is awake before the rest of the house. A deep daybed takes the early reader; two woven chairs are ready when somebody else brings coffee. The screens do the practical work and the painted ceiling holds the room together. Nothing has to be rearranged when solitude becomes company.

THE DESIGN

The daybed changes the duration of a visit to the porch. It accommodates the person who wants to read alone before anyone else arrives, while two separate chairs make company easy later. The open end keeps the large piece from closing off the group.

Coral boards and a blue-gray ceiling give the enclosure a distinct identity in morning light. Cream rope introduces a lighter texture, and the small Oxford table provides a landing without occupying the passage. The arrangement can stay in place as the household’s attention shifts.
