Leave room after the chairs pull out

ROOM 135 · Dining Room
A converted barn, conceived for Suffolk.
A long Sunday lunch needs room after the chairs have been pulled out. This converted barn keeps its timber structure visible and brings the scale down through a generous table, comfortable seats and low-hanging light.

The table is placed for an occupied room. There is a route around the seated group for serving and for anyone getting up, rather than a generous-looking gap that vanishes as soon as a chair moves. The barn roof can remain high without dictating the scale of dinner.
Pale timber and stone grey keep the main surfaces quiet. Tomato red and a little jade appear in smaller pieces. Café in Paris gives the people at the table a scene to look towards across the room.
The glass pendant brings light down to the meal, while the candleholder stays modest enough to see across. Serving dishes are part of the composition because they belong to the occasion. The room is intended to be better with people and lunch in it.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
The long table is placed for an occupied room, with a clear serving route around it.
The pendant brings a human scale beneath the barn roof.
The timber is not buried in garlands or decorative greenery.
Glass, ceramics and a modest candleholder give the table life while leaving space for serving dishes.
WHAT TO BORROW
Pull the chairs out and carry a serving dish around the table. The route that remains tells you more than the empty room's dimensions.
