Aubergine beside the bath

Published

A generous contemporary bathroom in a thoughtfully renovated urban home.

The bathroom doesn't have to be the room where your nerve gives out. A substantial aubergine wall puts colour behind the white bath and oak-finish vanity. Pale stone keeps the shower and floor easy to see, so the dark paint can have its full effect.

THE DESIGN

Keeping the aubergine together makes more sense here than distributing it through towels and accessories. The straight back of the bath meets the wall; its curved front leaves a softer edge beside the clear floor. The separate shower is lined in pale stone.

Two drawers in the vanity put supplies below the basin. Above them, a round mirror interrupts the rectangular cabinet and wall planes. The Autumn Oak finish introduces grain, while brass stays at the small working fittings. These are enough changes of surface for the room.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

One substantial coloured wall is enough to change the bathroom.

Colour palette

  • Deep aubergine
  • Pale stone
  • Autumn oak
  • Chalk
  • Brushed brass
01

Colour does an architectural job

Colour stays on a substantial wall instead of appearing in small, disconnected patches. The white bath has a clear outline against it.

02

Pale surfaces give the eye a rest

The lighter floor continues into the shower. That connection makes the wet area readable and gives the darker wall a definite stopping point.

03

Give the basin some storage

Two drawers keep supplies close to hand beneath the ceramic basin. The oak finish introduces grain on one useful surface.

04

Daylight brings the colour to life

Side light reveals variation in the aubergine. Check a paint sample through the day before committing: this room's colour depends partly on how the light reaches it.

05

The palette has clear limits

The towel relates to the main colour and brass stays at the fittings. Leaving out further accent colours keeps the aubergine readable as a single decision.

WHAT TO BORROW

Try the colour on a substantial sample beside the actual floor and vanity finish. Judge it in daylight and under the lights you will use at the mirror.
