Mint at the muddy entrance

Published

A country-house entrance, conceived for Northumberland.

Coming home takes a little floor space. This mint boot room leaves room to bend over shoes, put down a bag and let the next person through.

THE DESIGN

The bench has clear floor in front, with boots on the stone below rather than in the passage. Smaller dry things move into wall storage; the tall cupboard takes what need not remain on show. Each stage of arrival has a place before the next begins.

Mint covers the walls beside the oak bench, with a small tomato-red accent. The directed light reaches hooks and seat on dark afternoons. Canvas storage uses its compatible wall module and needs the specified fixings; it is a working part of the arrangement, not an object to hang wherever there is a gap.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A room can take the mud without taking the joy out of coming home.

Colour palette

  • Mint
  • Natural timber
  • Warm stone
  • Tomato red
01

A bench you can actually use

There is space in front for a person bending to tie shoes, with bags stored clear of their feet.

02

Separate wet and dry

Boots stay on the stone floor; gloves and scarves go into the wall storage.

03

Colour on the useful wall

Mint surrounds the bench and storage. One small red accent is enough against it; the ordinary coats and bags will supply further variation.

04

Light the return home

A directed wall light reaches the bench and coat hooks on dark afternoons.

WHAT TO BORROW

Sit on the bench and lean forward to tie a shoe. Keep that space free, with wet footwear below and dry gloves somewhere separate.
