Stand where the ceiling rises
The chair can approach the slope, but its front needs enough headroom to stand up. The books take the lowest part of the eaves.

ROOM 117 · Other
A edwardian loft conversion, conceived for Norwich.
The low part of a loft is often treated as a problem to hide. This mint reading room gives it useful shelving, with the chair and the route towards it in the taller part of the space.
See the product sourcesTHE DESIGN
The roof sets the arrangement. Low shelving follows the eaves without pretending they are vertical walls. The armchair sits beside the slope, where there is room to stand up comfortably; the central floor stays open.
Charcoal wool gives the chair substance against mint. The little brown table is close enough for a mug, while a wall-mounted lamp reaches the page without a base underfoot. A fishbone throw can be left folded until the afternoon gets colder.
Rain at the rooflight is part of the appeal. Nesting brings a small burst of colour and activity to the quieter wall. This room does not need to become a second living room; one good seat and a reason to stay are enough.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
The chair can approach the slope, but its front needs enough headroom to stand up. The books take the lowest part of the eaves.
The wall-mounted task light reaches the book without a floor base in the narrow route.
Books fit under the eaves, where full-height storage would fight the roof.
The rooflight makes weather part of the room. Mint keeps the grey afternoon from feeling heavy.
WHAT TO BORROW
Try sitting down and standing up at the proposed chair position. The shelves can tolerate less headroom than the person reaching them.
