Put a destination at the end
A lamp and small picture draw the eye through the hall without placing furniture in its centre.

ROOM 123 · Other
A 1930s semi-detached house, conceived for Stockport.
A hallway can do more than deliver people to another room. Apricot walls, a useful seat and a small pool of light give this 1930s passage a destination of its own.

The walking route is the first thing to preserve. Furniture stays against the walls, with the bench and shallow console on separate stretches rather than narrowing the same section from both sides. The front door can open properly.
The bench earns its depth by providing a place to put shoes on and somewhere to keep them afterwards. A mirror and directed wall light make the daily arrival and departure easier. Apricot brings warmth to the length of the hall without requiring more objects.
The small Boots print is an appropriate joke, not a theme to extend throughout the house. A lamp at the far end gives the eye somewhere to go after dark. The passage still works as a passage; it simply no longer feels forgotten.
WHY THE ROOM WORKS
A lamp and small picture draw the eye through the hall without placing furniture in its centre.
The bench and console occupy separate stretches of wall, leaving a continuous walking route.
The storage bench provides somewhere to put shoes on, rather than another surface for unopened post.
A wall light makes the hall feel inhabited on the way through.
WHAT TO BORROW
Walk in carrying the things you normally bring home. Put the seat and storage where you stop, and keep them outside the narrowest part of the passage.
