Leave something for the guest

Published

A country cottage, conceived for Shropshire.

A bedside and bench are useful only if the guest can use them. This mint cottage bedroom leaves both partly empty, with the patterned textiles doing the decorating.

THE DESIGN

The timber bed has a clear outline and space at its sides. A bedside drawer takes the small things, while a bench gives luggage or folded clothes somewhere to go. Neither surface needs to be filled before the guest arrives.

Mint keeps the walls fresh through dull autumn light. Oatmeal carpet supplies softness below, with a dusty mulberry note in the patterned cushions. The bare timber bed frame adds enough texture without a second rug or an upholstered footstool.

The Mermaid and the Moon is a small, slightly unexpected companion. A portable lamp can move to suit a reader. The most hospitable part of the scheme is the unclaimed space, which allows someone else to feel at home for a few nights.

WHY THE ROOM WORKS

A guest room should offer a place for the guest’s things.

01

Make room for someone’s things

A bedside drawer and clear bench give a guest somewhere to unpack.

02

Mint does the broad work

The walls stay fresh while mulberry appears in a limited textile accent.

03

Keep the timber visible

The bed frame brings warmth without an overbuilt upholstered headboard.

04

A lamp within reach

The portable light can sit where the guest needs it, rather than where a trailing cable dictates.

WHAT TO BORROW

Prepare the room, then bring in a bag as though you were staying. Notice what needs moving before you can unpack, and leave that surface free next time.
